DAY 1 - 2 PACUARE LODGE

Pacuare Lodge, is an upscale jungle retreat built to prevent deforestation and helps employ and educate the local people. Opened in 1995 on the banks of the Pacuare River in the center of Costa Rican rainforest, Pacuare Lodge serves as a model for eco-lodges around the world and is one of only 65 ecotourism businesses worldwide identified by the World Tourism Organization as models of sustainable development.

Getting there by Land:
Guests are picked up by private transportation and begin their exciting adventure. The two and a half hour trip then skirts the slopes of the Irazú and Turrialba Volcanoes. The trip ends in Santa Marta, where to board a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the remaining six-kilometer gravel road journey to the banks of the Pacuare River. The adventure continues on a four-wheel-drive vehicle and cross the river on a hanging gondola traversing above the river via a 100 meter cable running from riverbank to riverbank. Upon arrival at the other side, another experience begins—no more vehicles, electricity, or roads. The last 300 meters to the Pacuare Lodge are hiked over a trail that parallels the river. Equipment is transported by the staff, and a refreshing cocktail awaits clients.

Getting there by River:
Guests arrive at the River bank where the rafting adventure begins. In this first day on the river, a journey that takes just over an hour and a half, the river passes through scenic canyons where crystal clear waterfalls plummet down into the rapidly coursing river below. Tall trees and dense green vegetation come right down to the water's edge.

Pacuare Lodge
Guests stay in elevated thatched-roof bungalows and suites with canopy beds, private bathrooms and verandas, and almost 360-degree views. Staff members serve meals on fine china in the open-air restaurant, where there's also a small bar and lounge.
